French
Intent
Our vision for French at Wilbury is 'To have respect for all languages and cultures'.
At Wilbury, the intent is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others, and cultural differences. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners and will appreciate other cultures.
Implementation
At Wilbury, we use the Language Angels scheme to ensure that the four key skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) are taught. Each year group are taught 3 units of work per year (one unit per term) to ensure that they are immersed in the unit to allow them to retain the learning. Each week, each class has a 30-minute timetabled slot in which to learn French; one week an oral based lesson and the next week revision of the language and a written task. Embedded within these lessons are also reading and listening tasks.
The French units that we have selected to teach, reflects the learning that the children are expected to know before they attend secondary school.
Year 3 and 4 will be taking on a more practical approach to their lessons, while using the scheme of work as a basis for the content of each lesson, and lessons will be recorded through the use of floor books which will contain samples of writing and photographs.
Year 5 and 6 will also be using the scheme as a basis for lessons but all children will be recording their written work in their own exercise book.
Impact
At Wilbury, our MFL curriculum will ensure all children develop key language learning skills set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures.
By the end of KS2, children will:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language
- speak with increasing fluency, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion, asking questions and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- have enriched their language learning by developing an understanding of French culture.
- be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills when transferring to KS3
