Curriculum Overview
School Curriculum Intent
At Wilbury Junior school we have worked together to design a curriculum that supports the needs of the whole of our school community. We believe that our curriculum should be broad, balanced and relevant and meet the needs of all children whatever their ability. The curriculum taught is the National Curriculum and we ensure that all these statutory requirements are met and in some subjects go beyond these requirements. We ensure the children have a range of learning experiences that challenge, stimulate and promote thinking,learning and achievement. We are a school that promotes and develops lifelong learning and excellent learning habits, supporting progress of pupils and allowing them to shine during and beyond their time at Wilbury.
Aims
The curriculum is planned effectively, providing continuity and progression. It promotes an enjoyment of learning and a commitment to learning and achieving. It is underpinned by our school values.
Through the provision of rich and varied activities, we aim to:
- enable pupils to acquire and develop a broad and balanced range of knowledge, skills and understanding;
- encourage the best possible progress and the confidence to achieve and aim high in all pupils;
- enable pupils to make connections across different areas of learning;
- help pupils to think creatively and use developed organisational skills to solve problems;
- develop pupils’ capacity to show resilience towards their learning; working independently and collaboratively;
- enable pupils to work to understand sustainability - to develop knowledge, skills and motivations for their actions, allowing them to maintain their own environmental, social, physical and mental wellbeing – and that of the school, community and wider world now and in future generations.
- enable pupils to respond with courage to opportunities, challenge and responsibility;
- deepen and extend children’s cultural capital through knowledge and experience;
- develop children’s understanding of British Values, diversity, equity and inclusion; celebrating these with tolerance and respect within the school, community and wider world.
The Implementation of the Curriculum
The curriculum is taught through discrete subjects teaching of all subjects, making links when appropriate. We use the National Curriculum for all subjects.
For the teaching of Maths we use the government approved scheme of work and resources, Power Maths and for English we use the Herts for Learning scheme and resources, Essential Writing. For Reading we use Complete Comprehension alongside Herts for Learning recommended reads.
We also use the Charanga scheme for Music, Language Angels for French, Jigsaw PSHE, Get Set for PE scheme and Teach Computing scheme and resources for Computing.
For Science, History, Geography, RE, Art and Design Technology we use Cornerstones Curriculum Maestro to design the curriculum structure and for termly topics, resources and lessons.
Long-term plans for each subject area ensure complete coverage of the curriculum, consistency across year groups and progress throughout the school.
The children are taught with their year groups with some children being withdrawn for small group support.
