Inclusion

Wilbury Junior School aims to be responsive to all aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion and aims to increase the learning, wellbeing, mental health and participation of all pupils within the school and its locality. We are developing inclusive values which are shared between all staff, pupils, governors, parents/carers, and the wider community.  In a secure, accepting, collaborative and stimulating environment, everyone is valued and diversity is seen as a rich resource to enhance, embrace and celebrate, supporting the learning of all.

This inclusive culture is beginning to be reflected in all school policies and practices. We ensure that classroom and extra-curricular activities encourage the participation of all pupils, drawing on their knowledge and experience outside school. Teaching and support are integrated together, enabling all pupils to overcome barriers to learning and participate fully in school life.

The teaching in class and out of class (which includes afterschool clubs, lunchtime clubs and offsite visits) supports all children regardless of their ability or disability, this is through adaptive teaching and approaches to support all learners. We ensure we have a wide range of clubs on offer to support engagement and wellbeing to ensure that all pupils have opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge.

Inclusion will be achieved through analysis and assessment of children’s needs, by monitoring the quality of teaching and the standards of pupils’ achievements and by setting targets for improvement. Learning for all children is given equal priority and available resources are used to maximum effect.

Our school motto ‘Together, Believe, Achieve, Shine’ underpins our ethos and is part of our diversity, equity and inclusion for students, staff, governors, parents/carers, and the community. We embrace and celebrate our differences to support belonging. We want to recognise and adapt our approach and teaching to support all.

Inclusion at Wilbury Junior School includes the following for pupils, staff and the school community.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

What is DEI?

DEI stands for diversity, equality, and inclusion. Wilbury Junior School believes that all identities should be valued and celebrated by our school community. An awareness of DEI further helps us to embrace, celebrate and address any instances of prejudice or bias and to make sure we are an actively anti-prejudiced school.

What do we want to achieve?

  • At Wilbury Junior School we are joined by other schools in the Agora Learning Partnership to create a cross MAT DEI strategy, this is taking place in 2023-2024 following a year-long training for several of us . We want our strategy to have longevity, authenticity and impact for not only the children, staff and communities around our schools. This will be announced shortly

  • All school staff, children and community are aware of the 9 protected characteristics, and actively participate in an anti-prejudiced school culture.

  • Subject leaders are conducting work to support the representation and ambition for all children in their subjects

  • All children are taught to understand that our school celebrates all identities and that they should feel empowered to notice and address injustice in their lives.

The 9 Protected Characteristics are actively promoted in our academy through:

  • Our school ethos statements, SDP, and SEF
